Funeral Notice: Jean Smith

Smith, Jean 73, of Edina, MN and formerly Maple Grove, MN, died Sunday November 5. Jean or "Jeanie" as she was known to her childhood friends and family in Frederika, Iowa, was born in Waterloo, Iowa to C.W. and Bea Davison. She graduated in 1962 from Tripoli High School in Tripoli, Iowa. She attended Humboldt Airline School in Minneapolis and shortly thereafter worked for North Central Airlines. Jean created amazing quilts, clothing and home décor. Her unique eye turned the ordinary into treasure whether it was a holiday table for her family or a detailed dollhouse for her granddaughter. She was skilled on the sewing machine making wedding dresses and accessories for her daughters and daughter-in-law. She loved music, played the piano, enjoyed gardening and reading. Jean raised three children with her husband of 49 years, James M. Smith, originally of La Crosse, WI. She also cared for nearly 100 infant foster children over a 25-year period with Lutheran Social Services. She taught the gifts of selflessness and empathy by providing a loving home for infants in their first weeks and months of life. Jean is preceded in death by father C.W. Davison and sister Jan Davison-Engle. She is survived by her husband, James; children Tamara (Mike) Carisch, Michael (Terri) Smith, and Jennifer (Olaf) Strand; mother Bea Davison; sister Barb (Jim) Scherr; grandchildren Luke, Gracie, Sylvia, Samuel, Jackson, Evan, Annika; relatives and many friends. Visitation is 10 am Thursday, November 16 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am; Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5071 Eden Ave, Edina, MN.
