Brahms Requiem Concert @ OLG

This afternoon, the OLG Schola Cantorum preformed Excerpts from the Brahms Requiem.

Compsed by johannes brahms between 1865 and 1868, the work entitled Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift (A German Requiem to Words of the Holy Scriptures) is a sacred work, though not a liturgical one.  It does not follow the traditional Latin Requiem texts of the Church which encompass prayers for the dead, but instead focuses on bringing comfort to the living in the wake of death.  Indeed, the first movement's text translates, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted," from the Beatitudes.  Almost all movements connect different Bible verses, which lead from suffering and mourning to consolation.  The very last work si the same as the first: "selig" (blessed).
