I believe in the power of community whether it is the community we live in, the community of our friends or the community of believers, the faithful. I think that we are all better people when we remember that we are part of something larger than ourselves and our self interest. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that there is a place for self interest and taking care of those closest to us. Throughout time, the loving care of a family has been the strongest building block for society and I believe that it still should be. But it is in the family that we first begin to understand that there is something bigger than each of us through giving and receiving love, through doing chores, through going to church and worshiping God. Our faith life is lived in a community that nurtures our children through baptisms and faith formation, celebrates optimistic love in weddings, prays with the anxious through the sacrament of the sick and comforts the sorrowing. In short, we honor and acknowledge every milestone of life, reminding all of us the importance of each of us. To me, that's one of the best things of our faith, knowing that I am loved by God as me, but that I am also part of this community of believers that knows it bears responsibility for one another. Something to think about.
