By now, if you’re like me, you’ve had enough of presidential politics to last for a while, but it won’t end anytime soon. Fortunately, we’ve all survived the major party’s political conventions which we’ve listened to ad nauseum. I find much of the political rhetoric today depressing, no matter who is saying it. Please understand that I love this country and believe that our political system generally works very well, but I don’t think it is working as well as it could be right now. Both sides are demonizing the other despite there being people of deep faith and good intentions on both sides of the aisle. I know a great deal about what candidates think is wrong, but very little about how they will actually fix it. I believe that we have more to gain by looking for common ground than by emphasizing differences and that sincere debate of the issues can be a way to understanding. A friend gave me a prayer for the election and I especially like this part of it: “Awaken Your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world, But rather a community of faith renewing the world. May that make us all the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth.” (Taken from A Prayer for our Nation’s Election) Something to think about.
