Funeral Notice: Mary Gertrude (Malone) McGovern

McGovern, Mary Gertrude (Malone) age 90, of Edina, Minnesota died March 12, 2017. Born in Minneapolis, Mary Malone and her family moved across the country given her father's career in the U.S. Air Force. She graduated from St. Margaret's in Minneapolis. She earned a degree in English from St. Catherine's College in St. Paul. She teased her children about the excitement of belonging to the first class from St. Catherine's that could leave their white gloves behind when going out for the evening. She married Jim McGovern in January, 1951 and they raised five children moving from south Minneapolis to St. Louis Park and Bloomington as their family grew. They had many life-long friends, in particular, several couples they met, when they were all young and newly married parishioners of the Church of Christ King. These friends remained dear to them throughout their lives. Mary loved being a mother and grandmother and particularly enjoyed young children. She was a remarkable caregiver especially attentive to those who were sick or injured. She was a terrific cook and a gracious hostess; she enjoyed entertaining. She loved the visual arts and displayed a keen sense of design and color that was evident in her ability to create a beautiful home, a lovely flower garden or an elegant piece of ceramic art. Her ability to see beauty in all things was passed onto her children. Throughout her life Mary's faith was her foundation. Catholicism inspired her values and her commitment to her family, friends and those she met along life's journey. She will be remembered with love and appreciation by those privileged to share her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph McGovern, sister, Kay Malone (John Lillie), son-in law, Rick Hagen, daughter-in-law, Shirley Berney, brother in-law, Tom McGovern Jr., and parents, Gertrude and John Malone. She is survived by children, Jim Jr. (Billie Bechold), Kathleen, Pat (David Cossi), John and Nancy, and grandchildren: Kayla, Grace and Jack, Colin, and Megan and Aaron, Dom (Addi Jadin) and Criste (Rob Jones) Cossi, Dan Berney, and nephews and nieces. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 27, 11:00 am with visitation one hour beforehand at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5701 Eden Ave, Edina (952-929-3317). Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
