Stewardship Reflection - 5th Sunday of Lent

Sunday Readings: Is 43:16-21/Ps 126:1-6/Phil 3:8-14/Jn 8:1-11

Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.
— John 8:7

What was Jesus writing in the thin topsoil? Was it a list of sins? Was it the names of the other adulterers present? Or was it the new law: “Love your neighbor as yourself?” We can only speculate. What we do know is that this woman was recognized by Jesus and represented the people for whom he came to sacrifice Himself and release from the slavery of sin. Jesus came not to judge but to forgive and save, opening the way to grace, reminding us that we are all sinners and we all need mercy.
