Altar Server Ministry

In 2001 Pope John Paul II held a General Audience that included 1,000 young people desiring to be altar servers. With great joy The Holy Father complimented them for desiring to take their vocation seriously. He told them that their commitment to the altar “is not only a duty but a great honor”. A duty in that their vestments are to remind them of the vestments of baptism where we all are baptized into Christ and “put on Christ”. Honorable in that these very vestments put the server in “a privileged place in the liturgical celebration”. He described that the server’s proximity to very presence of Jesus through the actions of the priest, in the gathered community and above all in the Eucharist places the altar server as true servants of Jesus Christ. As honorable, distinguished servers of Christ servers are beginning of a great lifelong friendship with Jesus.

With St. John Paul II as our inspiration, we are committed to help our altar servers realize that they are commencing an honorable, respected, and holy activity. We will work towards instilling responsibility and accountability with an aim that they grow in their love for Jesus and His Church making them faithful witnesses of our Church. To realize that end we need our students and parents to be committed to this project. We are looking for families that will regularly have servers at Mass so that they can become confident witnesses to the Church and the program. This can only happen with an enthusiasm from both the parents and the servers.

People who are in the 6th grade or older are encouraged to become altar servers! Besides serving at weekend Masses, servers are needed at daily masses, weddings and funerals. If you attend Our Lady of Grace Catholic School and desire to be a server for the school Masses, you will be expected to serve a minimum of one weekend Mass a month at OLG or at your home parish if you attend another church.

If you are interested in applying to become an altar server, please fill out the application.
