Nancy Nelson Rethlake, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and devoted caregivers.
Born on April 9, 1929, in Minneapolis, Nancy was the beloved daughter of Carl and Ann (Halek) Nelson. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Minnesota. Driven by her passion for helping children learn and grow, she later completed a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of St. Thomas.
For more than 30 years, Nancy dedicated her life to teaching children in the Minneapolis Public Schools, serving at Lyndale, Armatage, and Fulton. Teaching was not simply her profession—it was her calling. She believed in every child who entered her classroom and touched countless lives through her patience, kindness, and encouragement. Even after retiring, her love for education continued as she spent countless hours volunteering in her grandchildren's classrooms at Our Lady of Grace.
While Nancy took great pride in her career, her greatest joy was her family. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether cheering from the sidelines at soccer and hockey games, attending school performances, or simply sharing time together, she was always present. Her family was the center of her world, and she made each person feel deeply loved and valued.
Nancy had a gift for bringing light wherever she went. Her infectious laugh could fill a room, and her warm smile made everyone feel welcome. She listened with genuine interest, offered support without hesitation, and always found time for others. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
On August 1, 1953, Nancy married the love of her life, Oliver Kielen Rethlake. Together they built a beautiful life and shared nearly 73 years of unwavering love, partnership, and devotion. They traveled the world together, enjoyed afternoons spent gardening and playing bridge, shared walks with friends, and created a lifetime of cherished memories. Through every season of life, they remained each other's greatest blessing.
A woman of deep faith, Nancy lived her Catholic values each day through quiet acts of compassion, humility, and service. Her faith guided her life and gave her strength, purpose, and peace. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and adoring great-grandmother whose legacy will live on in the family she loved so fiercely.
Nancy is survived by her beloved husband, Oliver; daughter, Diana; son, Mark (Ann); sister, Carol; nephews, Brad, Brian, and Todd; grandchildren, Morgan (Sean), Michael (Brittney), and Emily (Peter); and great-grandchildren, Winston, Saylor, Steeley, and Maggie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Ann (Halek) Nelson, and her brothers, Leroy and Charles Nelson.
Though our hearts are broken by her loss, we find comfort in knowing that Nancy now rests in the loving arms of the Lord. The light she brought into this world will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched and the family she cherished so deeply. Her love remains with us always, and her memory will be a blessing until we are together again.
